Solar VFD Pump Inverters for Boreholes & Irrigation
Across Cyprus, most farms and boreholes already have a good AC submersible or surface pump installed. A solar VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) lets you keep that pump and run it from a solar array, reducing diesel and electricity costs without changing the whole system.
A solar VFD is different from a standard hybrid inverter:
- It soft-starts the pump, avoiding heavy inrush current.
- It adjusts the pump speed to follow available solar power.
- It offers better protection for motors and pumps under difficult conditions.
- It is designed around water flow, not household loads.
Most pumps in Cyprus are rated in HP: 5 HP, 10 HP, 15 HP, etc. On our side we size the drive in kW, but we always translate that into HP when we recommend a model. For example, a 4 kW drive is typically used for pumps around 5 HP, 7.5 kW for 10 HP, and so on. We will confirm the correct size based on your pump label.

When Should You Use a Solar VFD?
A solar VFD is usually the right choice when:
- You already have a working AC borehole or irrigation pump.
- Your pump is an AC borehole or irrigation pump (single or three-phase) with a clearly marked voltage and HP rating on the motor nameplate.
- You want to cut running costs by using daytime solar instead of diesel or expensive grid tariffs.
- You are happy to pump during the day into a storage tank or irrigation network, without batteries.
In other cases, a DC solar pump or a full hybrid inverter + battery system might be a better fit. We look at your pump power, depth, flow requirements and water usage pattern and recommend the right approach.
